What do we do?

The role of Harvest Haliburton is to advocate for local food and protection of land. We have completed many projects in pursuit of this goal.

Some highlights of our work:

In 2019, Harvest Haliburton hosted a Food and Agriculture Economic Development Forum. The event was designed to bring together community stakeholders from all corners of the food sector to discuss the local food system and identify strategies to help it thrive. Participants learned about existing food- and agriculture-based businesses, organizations, and initiatives and they discussed how to expand, support, and advance the local food system. Through the development of an action plan, Forum attendees articulated their priorities for how they would like to see Haliburton County’s food and agriculture sector flourish. In 2015, Harvest Haliburton conducted a Community Food Assessment. A Community Food Assessment is a powerful way to tell the story of what is happening with food in a community with the goal of encouraging efforts to improve how food is produced, processed, and distributed. Through this assessment, diverse stakeholders work together to research local food-based infrastructure, share findings, make recommendations, and implement changes based on their findings. You can view the full Community Food Assessment Report here.

What is a food system?

A food system is a collaborative network with six components:
  • Production
  • Processing
  • Distribution
  • Access/Retailing
  • Consumption
  • Composting/Waste Management

Creating a sustainable local food system supports our economy, the health of our environment, and the health and social well-being of our residents. This makes our community a wonderful place, to live, work, play and visit.
